As we move into the summer months, spending time outdoors is high on our priority list and the recommended way to visit as we maintain our 2 meter physical distance.

All the activities we’ve been dreaming about, backyard barbecues, hikes in the woods, camping, cycling, taking the dog for long walks on the beach, are better without having to worry about tick and mosquito bites that can carry Lyme disease or West Nile virus.

Below are some tips as you and your family enjoy the outdoors.

Tips to Avoid Tick Bites

  • Walk on cleared pathways and avoid densely wooded areas
  • Wear light coloured, long-sleeved shirts and pants to spot ticks more easily
  • Tuck pants into socks
  • Wear insecticide treated clothing like the Marks brand Windriver
  • Apply a long-acting insect repellent like Care Plus Icaridin on exposed skin
  • Check yourself, other family members and pets daily, along with all clothing and gear worn while outside
  • Put clothes and towels used outside into the dryer on high heat for at least 10 minutes
  • Shower or bathe once inside

Tips to Avoid Mosquito Bites

  • Remove standing, pooled water around your home and/or campsite
  • Avoid using perfume or scented body products
  • Wear light coloured clothing
  • Apply a long-acting insect repellent like Care Plus Icaridin on exposed skin
  • Keep mosquitoes outside, using screens in windows and sleeping under netting when necessary
