With a lot of different bug repellents on the market, it’s hard to choose the best option for you and your child.
Icaridin, a somewhat new addition to the Canadian market is recommended for both adults and children from 6 months and older. This means families will only need one product to keep everyone protected against harmful bugs.
Icaridin – The First Choice Repellent
Icaridin is regarded by Health Canada as a first-choice repellent for children 6 months to 12 years. Icaridin lasts up to 12 hours per application, which is great for kids in day camps and other summer activities where parents are not always around to reapply. Furthermore, Icaridin is less irritating to skin, dries quickly when applied without leaving a sticky residue compared to other insect repellents. Icaridin can also be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Another great feature of Icaridin is it’s safe around synthetics and plastics – think Gore-tex jackets, sunglasses and plastic toys.
What about DEET?
Compared to Icaridin, DEET use is limited in children. For 6 months – 12 year olds, 10% DEET or less is recommended. This provides up to 2 hours protection and can only be applied up to 3 times per day for children 2-12 years of age. For infants and toddlers 6 months to 2 years – only one application of 10% DEET is recommended per day. DEET can also be irritating for children’s skin and have a greasy feel when it is applied.
